Intensive riding tuition

Although I’ve been riding a while I’m really just a happy hacker passenger rather than actually being a real rider on horses who need a bit more direction.

I’d like to change this and would like to kick start improving my skills with some intensive tuition and riding over a few days.

I know Talland does intensive stuff but I’m too novicey for them I think. I also came across Wheal Buller in Cornwall but can’t work out if it is even still open?

I’d like tuition and perhaps hacking but not just a trekking holiday.

Does anyone know of anywhere I could try?

Do you have lessons?

Drivingmissmaisie · 22/03/2025 18:01

Yes I’ve been having lessons at a BHS riding school since November, but not on my own horse due to logistics and only a group lesson of one hour a week which means I really don’t feel like I’m progressing very much.

the Island Rising Centre on IoW is amazing. They will work you hard!

So can't you just get more lessons ie block booking of private ones?

Drivingmissmaisie · 22/03/2025 19:10

Unfortunately not, they are very oversubscribed as it is, I was lucky to get a weekly spot, and I they don’t do intensive blocks as they just don’t have the time.

DD and
i have semi private lessons, not much more money than a group
lesson and it’s bloody hard work. Tailored just to us.

Wheal Buller closed years ago. I had a few sessions at Talland but wasn’t that impressed - they didn’t listen to what I wanted and it was very expensive for what it was. I had a much better experience at Willington Hall Riding Centre in Tarporley in Cheshire - the instructor was great and the sessions were completely tailored to me.

I've ridden at Willington Hall - if you book privates there they are very good at tailoring to your requirements and they have some lovely horses. I wasn't totally happy on their hacks, but that's just me.

I saw one in south wales which does hacking confidently intensive weeks.

They seem to specialise in deliberately experience everything out hacking, like tunnels, bigger roads, hazards, farm animals etc.

they did other “courses” so I’m sure they do a mix of the confidence hacking and more formal tuition.
