Bedding recommendations

I like a big fluffy straw bed with big banks, but the yard we moved to doesn't allow straw (😥) so we have to move to shavings/pellets or something similar.

Can anyone recommend bedding that makes a big fluffy bed but doesn't cost a fortune? I like Bedmax shavings but the yard staff muck them out so thoroughly that it costs a fortune buying several bales per week to keep the bed big.

Any recommendations?

Can you ask for him / her to be put on a deep litter bed ?
As long as its done properly the bed can be built up over a week or so .

Or could you do the mucking out yourself ?

We use chopped straw - there are lots of different commercial varieties (unabed, equinola etc) but we get ours directly from the farmer which makes it a lot cheaper. We use six bales to start off a bed and then top up with a couple more each week. It rots down on the muck heap way faster than wood shavings which is an added bonus. We used to use straw but our old gelding ended up with breathing problems due to mould spores from the straw so had to change to something else.

We use chopped rape straw it’s fab great if you want to deep litter and rots down really fast.

Bedmax straw pellets with a bale of shavings over the top works well for me with a big, messy horse. I like a deep bed and it gives a nice, thick, springy bed, and is also super absorbent so keeps the bed clean and means you won't have loads wasted when they're mucking out.

Thank you All!

Have never heard of chopped rape straw bedding but will check it out.

Bedmax pellets with Bedmax shavings on top sounds like it would make a nice bed.

I will try to ask yard staff not to clean everything out but leave a deep litter bed. 🤞
