Horse and pony names

A fun thread really. I was thinking about this on a long drive this morning. I learned to ride in the seventies and a yard was not complete without a Misty, a Fella, a Shadow, a Blue and a Prince.
Fast forward, and every horse in a yard of eight where i keep mine have 'human' names ie Arthur, Bob, Tom, Jasmine, Henry, Mary.
I learnt to ride on Hawk, moved onto Flurry, and worked with Zephyr and Solo when I was younger. It seems horse names go in fashion just like baby names.
I'd love to hear the names of horses you started out on, and the kind of names belonging to horses you know now
I've got dozens of names of horses I've known, but I'm curious to know if the human name thing is just round my way!
Ok I'm adding Flossy, Blossom and Laddie from my 70s childhood.

Wonder if anyone here recognises any yards / riding schools from this!

I wondered that too. Some of the combinations of names must be pretty unique.

Lovely thread OP. Maybe and Lady were a couple of my riding school favourites in the early 90's. Maybe was a speedy little chestnut mare that loved to jump, but had a nasty stop and spin manoeuvre that caught a lot of people out. Lady was a TB, who seemed to me as a teen like a proper grownups horse.

90s riding school, Star, Suzie, Chester, Oliver, Sam, Jay, Alice, Flurry, Cola, Tansy.

Every time there’s a horse thread like this I end up Googling local riding schools and thinking about riding again!

Some very familiar names here!
At our 90’s riding school we also had a Prince, Blue, Misty and Shadow.
Lasagne wins for me on this thread tho!

Ariela · 26/11/2024 11:09

In the 70s: Shetlands: Zebedee & Geronimo were, I thought, very apt.

ChiefClerkDrumknott · 26/11/2024 11:15

The ones I remember from the yard I learnt at in the 90s had Fallow, Chester, JP, Romy, Goldie, Rufus, Warrior, Penny and Charlie.

Every yard I’ve ever been on has a Charlie!

Eyesopenwideawake · 26/11/2024 11:21

I remember Tinker, Bunty, Playboy, Christmas, Compass and Jimbo (Jumbo?).

My own horses could have be named from the same era - Murphy, Troy, Speedy, Bertie and Billy!

brokenwand · 26/11/2024 11:31

growing up my first pony learning was Bracken then Lola, then Harmony & Nobby - think most yards had these names

I remember a Playboy too! Awful name! Lovely horse though.

Bella has been a super common name on yards I've been on since the 90s! I'd say Blue is also pretty common, I've known quite a few yards with a Blue/Bluebell etc. Red is another common one I think!

I think it's practically compulsory for riding schools to have a piebald cob called Domino or Jigsaw or similar!

Definitely known ponies with a lot of the names on this thread! Certainly known a Bramble, Clover, Shadow, Charlie, Daisy, Bracken, Honey, Snowy over the years- not all on the same yard though!

Lesina · 30/12/2024 22:16

Learnt as a young adult on a Dolly, Blue and a Chester. My current horse is named Daniel 😂. He is very much a Daniel :)

First pony was Strawberry which was shared between us and then circa mid 70s I got Starsky and my sisters had Raffles and Lancelot and my brother had Monty:

TallNeckedGiraffe · 30/12/2024 23:20

We had Cinnamon, Biscuit, Ginger and Buttermilk. My mum had a bit of a baking thing going on 😂

Catbustotoro · 30/12/2024 23:44

We were at a competition a while ago where there was a boy called Wolfie riding a pony called Dave!

SavvySquid · 30/12/2024 23:50

LeggusMiracticus · 06/01/2025 13:56

I think human names were quite common back then too - in the 70's I knew a William, Joey, Robin, Jonathan, Fanny, Tessa, Emma, Penny and Max.
There were also Flicka, Copper, Limerick, Sandy, Fizzy, Digger, HoneyBee, Ebony and Starsky.

The stables I started at last year had a flurry of Harry Potter names - I rode Diggory, Dumbledore and Hagrid. All 18hh heavies 😂

The smaller horses were what I thought of as "normal" pony names like Star, Penny, Debbie etc

I'm now riding privately and the horses have quite "showy" names I think - Harlequin, Domino, Grace, etc

The stables I grew up at 30 years ago there was a range - Pip and Pumpkin, Becky, Dolphin and Harmony, Miller, Raz, Endeavour, Dillon, Blue, Peter, Thin'n, etc.

I always wanted a horse called Endeavour!

NormalAuntFanny · 06/01/2025 14:31

The three newest club horses at my stables are Vegas, Kaprice and Muntja(!)

Two newest owned horses are Hesmerelda and Clovis.

I'd quite like a Clovis but the rest ...

Great thread!!!

Early rides: Snowy, Cocoa, Duke, Copper Coin, Lady… moved on to Doric, Kai, Chloe, Amicus, Silver, Fear (short for Never Fear, her sire was a well-known racehorse Never Say Die).
But my favourite name for a horse is from a TikTok vid that went viral. It features Scottish lady scolding her horse for taking an unusually inert nap.. by shouting “Stephen! I thought you were dead!” (cue Stephen looking up sheepishly then resuming his snooze).

I love the horse on TikTok called Chicken Nugget, full name Chicken Elizabeth Nugget

Every yard in the 90s seemed to have a Pepsi

Baital · 06/01/2025 18:46

Early 80s ' Tiddler (smallest) then Cindy and Sasha

Baital · 06/01/2025 18:49

The big horses were Lady, Silk and Foxtrot
