Riding clothes for 12 year old

FrenchFriends · 03/11/2024 10:36

DD 12 has been riding for just over a year and needs suitable clothes for riding.
Ideally a waterproof and warm LeMieux jacket but all the waterproof ones I have seen online don't seem to have lining.

Or do you not need lining if you wear a warm hoodie under? Please can you help me find warm suitable clothing, if it's LeMieux all the better as DD says all the other riders have lovely LeMieux gear.

Also, which tall riding boots are comfy? She is a size 4 but still quite short ( 4'9")
Tia.

Ariat have lovely jackets if she’d settle for that? DD has had a gorgeous soft shell one from them for years. Super warm, rain proof and lightweight. Got it when she was 14, she’s now 20 and it still looks good as new despite daily use!

Le Mieux clothing is never the best quality wise in my opinion. They’re predominantly a tack brand

Shufflealongnow · 03/11/2024 10:52

In the middle of winter on a horse she will definitely need a lined/insulated jacket! Even with the hoodie. Unless you live right in the middle of the jet stream in Cornwall or something. Or she only ever rides in the indoor school and doesn't hand around the yard before or after.

For lessons, something above the knee would be much better than a long coat that will hide most of her legs from the instructor. If she's on the shorter side, their Laura coat might come down to thigh level and fit the bill https://www.lemieux.com/lemieux-outlet/laura-waterproof-short-coat-port#selection.color=6905

Failing that, get her a Le Meiux puffer waistcoat or fleece and then a practical coat like this https://shiresequestrian.com/products/aubrion-halcyon-mid-length-coat

It's also worth a look on Vinted.

FrenchFriends · 03/11/2024 11:16

Thank you. Agree, she will need a warm and waterproof jacket, I remember last January and February, other riders in her group were warmly dressed in nice looking Lemieux jackets but they may have been younger than her and maybe there are more available in the Mini series.

I've been looking at these. She is still quiet short so adult size 6 won't fit her yet.

Are any of these suitable?
Didn't find anything on Vinted or eBay.

The Mountain Warehouse one is no good as you need a back vent so it fits over the saddle.

The blouson style are popular, but don't have a two-way zip so can bunch up when you're in the saddle.

And the LeMieux one you've linked isn't winter weight - but this one is www.lemieux.com/clothing/children/young-rider-collection/young-rider-skye-waterproof-coat-navy#selection.color=6658

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 03/11/2024 11:38

I've got yard rats they wear ariat blousons and crocs most of the year and come home covered in mud. They don't seem to get cold. They don't like riding in long coats.

I've just accepted my house smells of horse.

FrenchFriends · 03/11/2024 12:03

I however have little experience with horses or riding but dd aspires to be a yard rat @boulevardofbrokendreamss, she'd move in if she could.* *Do you have any recommendations in terms of clothing or footwear as dd is also going to help out with yard duties soon. With Christmas coming up we can splash out a bit but I'd like to get her things that are practical, nice and useful.

I think dd would prefer a shorter coat but I'll show her the one @Shufflealongnow linked to.

What do you think about this one, which may fit her in the not too distant future (depending on what a Lemieux size 6 is actually like)

Separately, will hunter boots with fleecey welly socks be ok for yard work?

OP posts:
CooksDryMeasure · 03/11/2024 12:14

They mostly wear Ariat around here. Crocs are not allowed on the yard, they wear wellies from the local farm supply shop with long le mieux socks!

liveforsummer · 04/11/2024 06:12

Wellies are fine for yard work but I'd look for neoprene lined ones. My dc have the le mieux. They are less pricey than other neoprene lined ones. Jacket you could look at an equidry or one of its copies eg rein coat etc however mine both wear blouson jackets from ariat and premier equine. Moretta by shires is great for riding boots that don't break the bank and dd1's have lasted her 2 years so far and still going. Dd2 has a super expensive pair from mountain horse that aren't even a year old, and not fairing so well

liveforsummer · 04/11/2024 06:14

And yes whenever I trim my back they are in their crocs which I think is insane with the amount of mud we have

Edithcantaloupe · 04/11/2024 06:22

Ariat good. I wear it. I find myself getting warm when riding tbh. If she wears a body protector that adds additional heat.

Saveusernsme · 04/11/2024 06:37

My DD loves her Le Mieux tops - usually she’ll wear just a base layer under her body protector but now it’s getting cooler she’ll add their zip through top. The issue with hoodie is that you get hot very quickly when riding so she’ll wear a long coat for yard work and but take it off for riding (unless it’s raining).

Long riding boots are hard to buy online. Some are too high in the leg so best bet is to try them in your local equestrian shop. An alternative is jodhpur boots with chaps.

mitogoshigg · 04/11/2024 07:13

Layers are key, it's fine to have an unlined coat as long as there is space for a fleece jacket plus a hoodie underneath that. I highly recommend thermals too (mountain warehouse ones are great). DD's riding gear all came from mole valley farmers. I don't ride horses but a motorcycle and the principle for layering is the same

Moretta by Shires are practically indestructible boots and Shires' coats are great too, as well as being good value.

Would Lemieux neoprene wellies fit a 12 year old? She's a shoe size 4 and 4.9 feet tall.

liveforsummer · 04/11/2024 11:04

@FrenchFriends my 11 year old wears them. She is slightly taller but also a size 4. I actually had to send the first pair back and size up for my 13 year old too.

FrenchFriends · 04/11/2024 16:57

Thank you @liveforsummer would you be bale to link to them or a picture of them?

Can I ask why they're wearing long coats for yard work, what's the benefit? Or is this only when it's raining?

Just when it’s cold and wet. Is your daughter just at the yard for lessons or is she mucking out, doing yard duties too? If shes only there for lessons atm then you don’t need to worry about long coats until you find yourself driving her to the yard at 7am on a Saturday and Sunday morning with a flask of soup and picking her up at 8pm at night smelling of horses and as happy as a clam ☺️
