My friend rents a yard with 8 others and they divide the grazing equally per horse, 3 of the yard come in all year at night and the rest stay out at night all summer. Everyone is in at night in winter.
Due to the grass growth this year the field of the ones that come in at night has considerably more grass than the out all night people.
It kicked off recently as the out at night field wanted some of the in at night field as they were running out of grass and don’t want to hay as the hassle of it and cost. The in at night field pointed out that the extra grass is only there because of the expense in time and money of the in at night owners who have paid for hay and bedding the whole year, and while it is their choice to bring in it’s also the choice of others to leave out.

Im not in either field but a friend of the yard in general and stuck in the middle somewhat just wanted to get a sanity check/opinion on this.
Not an option to have them all in together for many reasons as the in at night field have a much tighter worming testing regime then the out of night ones and also will be a clash of personalities with both horses (and I honestly think owners) if they were all to share a field .

Just to reiterate every horse owner has the same size of acreage to work with.

Oh the joys of the horse world and thank you for reading.

If I'd been feeding hay overnight year round I'd be bloody annoyed at others horses grazing my saved grass.
If the others don't want to hay their horses then they need to manage their grazing better imo.

This is what I’ve said, everyone has the same and it’s up to you how you manage it and whether that means haying or bringing in, but the people who have had the expenditure of hay all summer shouldn’t suffer because others want to make a saving

It never works when a group of people keep horses together, but I think the owners who have had their horses out 24/7 have got a nerve! They chose not to bring in at night and save their grazing so they must buy hay now. Talk about wanting cake and eat it too!

CountryCob · 19/09/2023 21:42

@Mollyplop999 I agree completely. Also the worming situation alone would worry me in sharing fields. What time would the out all the time people propose to move all their horses and poo pick in the morning so others can turn out? Never, because actually they just want to swap fields to the better managed field.

Nightmare. Here we have an acre in winter and an acre field in summer for each horse (individual turnout). If your horse eats their field down quickly then tough luck. We provide turnout not grazing. If liveries want to share that's up to them but they have to live with the consequences of that

Thanks guys, the people in the out all day and night field do have form for gaslighting and general narcissistic behaviour so you do end up wondering at times if you are actually the unreasonable one so wanted to just get an outside perspective.

I know what you mean OP, I have had such out of hand behaviour from the odd horse owner over the years that wonder if its me, especially when they feel hard done by for not getting what they want. I used to think we are all in the same boat so surely would understand/ cooperate and appreciate things but now I realise that in certain cases that is not how it goes

Onthebuckle · 08/10/2023 14:03

Ok update, this morning after another “we want your grass” argument. The in at night field stood their ground and the out 24/7 then moved the fence themselves as the in at nights are apparently being unreasonable. The horse world seems to attract some rather unhinged people sadly.

How tiresome. Nothing more batshit than a yard load of horse people
