Big horses scare me!

Is it normal in the horsey world to be scared of big horses?!

When I was turning my pony out yesterday a big horse who had just been moved to a new field near my ponies field came galloping up to us as we approached his field and leant over the fence. I thought he was just saying hi to pony but then realised he was barking his teeth and he ended up nipping her on her flank and she reared up. He left bite marks.

Then separately two big horses at the yard are having to be turned out separately to each other because one of them kicks. The idea of a massive horse kicking scares me too.

God I'd take a big one over a small pony any day 😂. The interaction between the horse and your pony sounds more like play, they can look fairy brutal but that's just horses.
All horses can kick. Not just the big ones!

Ponies are the devil incarnate. Especially Shetlands.

Give me a big ‘un any day.

Haha just me then 🤣🤦‍♀️

I fear little ones they bite and nip and are quick

big ones a firm no and if you pretend to be alpha it’s fine

Lockedinforwinter · 31/03/2023 09:34

Big ones hurt more when they stand on you, but other than that the little ones are far scarier!

Hmmm....maybe I just need to make friends with a few big ones then. The biggest I've ridden is 15.2 and that felt perfect for me!

I’ve ridden for 30 years and my height limit is 14.2hh 😄 I’m a pony lover through and through, specifically fell and dales (I’m that fussy!)

Anything bigger and I don’t want to/won’t ride or handle it!

Im sure they are lovely big horses out there but it’s just not for me.

Hoppinggreen · 31/03/2023 13:48

Of course it hurts more if they stand on you and it’s further to fall but I would handle a lovely big dopey Shire over the evil incarnate that is a Shetland any day

Flixon · 31/03/2023 15:25

I have two, both 14.2 - im 5'2 and petite (about 8 stone) so they suit me just fine. I would go up to 15hh but no bigger, I can get on from the ground and feel like just the right size. No bigger for me, they don't 'scare' me as such, but I feel less effective as a rider and less like I have control

Floralnomad · 31/03/2023 20:42

I’ve always found the big ones easier to manage even the awkward big ones .

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 31/03/2023 23:43

I much prefer big horses too I'm afraid Grin

If you had a big one that behaved like many ponies do you'd be in trouble but thankfully they rarely do. The little Dartmoor on our yard is like dealing with a grumpy tiger sometimes and I always say she'd be dangerous if she was full sized. 😆

Heartsnrainbows · 20/04/2023 22:56

I'm fat so don't have a choice, I have to be ok with the biguns. 😆Maybe get a couple of lessons on a large school horse to get you over the initial fear?

First one I ever rode was nearly 19hh and my usual school horse is just a hair under 17hh. He's the sweetest, cuddliest horse ever. Walks behind you and positions himself by the mounting block without even being led.

It's the little waist high pony who terrorises the rest of the paddock and the naughtiest one to ride is a 15hh cob who has launched everyone who has ever ridden him. Size can be misleading. Never trust a small frame and an angel face. 😂

One of the smallest horses on our yard regularly takes the person who is unlucky enough to bring him in, grass skiing every day 🤣 My 16.2 TB can be a tit but he is a polite tit and respectful of you, the little one has zero respect for anyone!
