How much for this cob?

Hi all...after advice

I have stumbled across a pony I like

She is approx 14.2 solid gypsy cob, 10 years old

Has been out of work for a year to have a foal who has now been weaned

She is very sweet natured, safe as houses, jumps (albeit not high) and is barefoot

I have just found out the seller is asking 5.5k for her

This seems a lot for an out of work little coblet

It's been about 10 years since I've bought a horse so maybe I'm completely out of the loop, but does that seem about right??

If she's really bombproof and sweet then she'll be worth whatever anyone will pay. They'll probably take 4.

Did she do much before the foal? Is she in work now?

I keep seeing ponies advertised “from field” for mid 4 figures, seems an awful lot! Though I haven’t bought one for 4 years.

If she was in work (even just potter about, not full work) and had done bits before I would say £4000/£4500, more if she was very well marked.

In this market £5.5k for a safe horse than isn’t ancient is very good.

Yes this is true.

I dont know much about her yet - I think she was bought from gypsies so don't know what she's done before foal

I was thinking 3.5-4 so was a bit surprised to hear 5.5!

How do you know she's safe?

How do you know she's safe?

Word of mouth, she has been ridden with current owner/friends but not for some time

As I say - dont know much about her yet. Very very early days. Just wanted to gather opinions r.e. price before I express further interest

She is literally what everyone wants, safe, cob (so will carry a bit of weight), right size for a mother daughter share. She’s not going to be £3k!

Pleasedontdothat · 29/01/2023 08:01

Safe, relatively young cobs with no medical issues are a lot more expensive than you’d think. However I would only ever buy a horse/pony now that is already doing the job I want it for. So if it’s going to be a pony club pony in a private home then that’s what it should be doing now, or happy hacking or anything else. This particular cob may be worth the asking price but without knowing that she will stand up to the job she’s being expected to do then it would be a bit of a gamble

Yes like everyone says if she's genuinely safe, sound, a weight carrier and suitable for all PC/RC activities in a novice-ish home then that price could be an absolute bargain. Prices have not really come down since their lockdown highs in the way you might have expected, if she was in work and out and about on the circuit you could pay as much as twice that round our way.

But I would be a bit questioning why the foal at her age, why breed from an otherwise undistinguished cobby mare, my concern would be that she'd previously proved not to be either safe or sound (or both!) and had been put in foal in lieu of her having any other job to do, too many people seem to do that despite it being the last thing I'd do from an unproven mare that had had an injury or proved unsuitable for their actual job myself. But I guess if you trust the seller and know her full history then that wouldn't be a concern.

If you can get on and ride off their yard in any direction you want to and she's fine with it. If she passes a vetting. Then she could be worth that. If they are selling her "from the field" then she's worth a lot less, like maybe £1k maximum. I would want to be able to get on and go for that price.
