DH refusing to get equine breakdown cover

As it says above. DH is refusing to get breakdown cover. We get car cover through the bank and trailer cover came with the newish trailer but obvs neither covers the other. If our car breaks down and can’t be fixed roadside I’m f@cked aren’t I? We don’t have any horsey mates to come to our rescue…. I’m not being a paranoid idiot am I? I thinks it’s an essential🤷🏼‍♀️ - please let me know if I’m right or I’m overly anxious…

I'm in your camp
Always have breakdown cover
Worst nightmare breaking down with horses on board
What's his plan should that happen ?

AriettyHomily · 26/10/2022 22:40

It's an essential. Why can't you just sort it?

Pleasedontdothat · 26/10/2022 22:45

What’s his plan if you do break down while towing? Specialist breakdown services cost nowhere near what it would cost to sort emergency horse transport if you broke down on the way back from a competition - I’d just get it sorted IIWY

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 26/10/2022 22:53

I would agree, essential. But a lot of the companies aren’t great so make sure you do some really good research. H&H forum is usually good for stuff like that

RagzRebooted · 26/10/2022 23:01

I don't have a horse, but I agree with you. I'm sure it's expensive, but I'd consider it just another expense of having a horse (which is known for being a money draining hobby!). You'd be totally stuck if you broke down without it, especially as presumably breakdown company would arrange everything for you. You don't want to be Googling equine recovery services at the side of the (potentially country) road on a Sunday afternoon or sometime equally inconvenient.

How often do you transport the horse? If rarely, then maybe not as essential but weekly or more then definitely makes sense.

Bullshirecop · 26/10/2022 23:02

Yes you definitely need breakdown cover to sort another box/trailer to rescue the horses in event of breakdown/ accident. It is essential as far as i’m concerned. The company I use charges less if you have breakdown cover on your car/4x4. It’s about £70 a year. Breakdown companies that come out to cars in event of breakdown/accident will not cover the transportation of live animals at all and will not tow them in a trailer even if the trailer is not damaged either. Also with the rescue service they know about what needs to be done to transfer the horses, if a vet is needed to sedate and will contact Police to stop traffic to make it safe to transfer the horses. I’ve seen so many breakdowns where people don’t have cover and try to change a tyre on their trailer on the side of a motorway with distressed animals on board. Ir have to oay latge sums on the spot to a specialist company to come and get the horses. It’s not worth not having it.

Bullshirecop · 26/10/2022 23:04

*and have to pay large sums. Sorry fat fingers 😂

Changingplace · 26/10/2022 23:08

Why does he get to decide? It’s completely necessary imo to have breakdown cover, I’d just arrange it - did you have it in the past and it’s elapsed?

rwalker · 26/10/2022 23:12

Do it and presume it’s your horse and pay for it yourself

NeverDropYourMooncup · 26/10/2022 23:15

Just pay for it yourself. That way, you know it's sorted even if he doesn't - the only time he would need to know is if something happens, when he'll be glad you ignored him and took it out anyway.

Howamihere · 26/10/2022 23:39

Thanks all, didn’t think I was being ott in my concerns - I’ll get on it in the morning. To those asking why I haven’t just sorted it myself, well, sadly that’s another future thread on a totally different board!! Thank you for validating my thoughts.

Also consider a trailer aid so you can change the tyre without taking horse off. It has taken me years but I only just cottoned on to the need for this

OldSpeclkledHen · 28/10/2022 07:10

Just get it. Why are you even asking?

DistrictCommissioner · 10/11/2022 22:28

My friend broke down on M5 with 2 horses in the trailer. Recovery is absolutely essential.

Trivium4all · 16/11/2022 02:59

My trailer insurance includes breakdown cover, and it's not expensive at all, compared with the car insurance. It's from SEIB...worth calling and getting a quote, and present your OH with unarguable numbers?
