How’s your grass holding up?

We’ve barely had any rain (2 drizzle days only) over the past 45 days. Our paddocks are gently sloping and south facing so sunny and hence our grass is dry. It’s the worst year I’ve experienced. No rain forecast for another two weeks :( how’s everyone else doing?

We have quite a few springs underground so ours it quite green. Ironically nine if my ponies can have grass so we're having to mow it 🙄

Until the rain last week mine were brown, dry and bare. After the rain one paddock has greened up nicely as there is only one pony on it (he needs the grass) so it's not getting eaten off too quickly. The other, with 2 fatties, is looking bare again. The two fatties are demanding haynets twice a day while the skinny is nibbling at his but mostly grazing.

With dry and hot weather forecast again I predict we will quickly revert to brown, dry and bare.

Brown and full of cracks. On clay and so hard it might as well be tarmac. Luckily mine is a cob who will eat the rougher grass the fussiest ones won't so he and his field mate go in to clear it up after the others and they are both holding their weight well. I'm working on the basis that the huge quantities of poo they create must mean they are finding enough.

Brown and the field is very hard so my arthritic old lady is finding it a bit hard going

They must be finding something out there though, we’re not using loads of hay and they’re not emptying their haynets (mine are out at night and in during the day)

We’ve got no rain forecast any time soon either.

What grass? 😁

MrsOwainGlyndŵr · 04/08/2022 17:02

What grass? Or are referring to the brown, hay like stuff that covers most gardens these days (including ours).

Funny how the weeds are still green though 🤔

I’m in West Yorkshire where we’ve had the head but also a lot of rain. It’s almost too good… sorry.

Short and crispy. Horses hanging around the gate waiting for hay, the young welshy trying to wipe you out every time you open the gate wanting in for a net. They are clearly getting something though as picking up more poo than ever. I don't think it helps that the hay we have atm is so nice - they are even leaving their feeds when hay is an option so we're getting through it more than we do in winter 😬

ChrisTrepidation · 19/08/2022 16:55

I've just put a round bale of hay in today for my colt and his field mate. Not enough grass in the field to keep a rabbit alive and I've only got two pony colts on 4 acres. It's desperate😭

Shadowboy · 19/08/2022 22:14

Yes I’m still feeding hay. Dairy farmer down the road said he’s fed 1/3 of his winter feedstock already!

@MrsOwainGlyndŵr Yes why are the weeds always so lush and healthy?😅
