All other things being equal are there any recommendations for horse insurance please? 12 yo. Price just under £5k. Pony club activities, nothing glam.

I used NFU and always had a good experience with claims -even when I hit £13.5k in just over a year! One was an emergency pts overnight on a Friday night (atypical myopathy) and there was not only no quibble but they checked that I was aware of everything I could claim.

NFU are good but expensive. Became too much to justify as mine got older so changed to Petplan, they’re good to pay out but very quick to exclude anything that could be even vaguely related, I’ve argued a couple of exclusions as being rather tenuous and to be fair they’ve taken them off again. Wouldn’t touch E&L with a barge pole!

I used to work in insurance and NFU was the gold standard for equine insurance

A vet recommended KBIS to us. Apparently they are also good at paying out

Nfu are amazing, have always paid out!

Friends have had bad experiences with both KBIS and PetPlan not paying out. NFU have a good reputation but they wouldn’t even give me a quote for dd’s new horse last year because her old horse had had two claims the year before with a different insurer. Her old boy was insured with Insurance Emporium (they used to be E&L) and they paid out with no quibbles when he had a nightmare medical year. However their new policies say you have to pay the excess plus 17% of vet fees plus they don’t pay out if there’s any barbed wire in the fields so you need to be careful
