How to deal with hoof abscess here

Good that farrier is coming out as will be able to confirm. We thought our boy had an abscess last summer but it turned out he’d trodden on something sharp in the field and had a puncture wound in his frog ..

If you trust your farrier, take advice from him / her. Soaking in a bucket of either saline, epsom salts of iodine won't do any harm, either way - rubber buckets are safest (from my experience). Good luck

Don’t soak it above the coronet band though - any abscess finds the easiest way out and if the top of the hoof is soaked it is an easier route for the pus to come out.

Add animalintex, nappies, duct tape and an old bit of rug canvas to your list - farrier will show you what to do with it all.

We left turned out for movement and tried, for the first time, Dorothy McCreadie's Drawing Mix on recommendation from a friend. I was sceptical but within three days the abscess had burst (sole) and he was sound a few days after that once it had drained. Only other thing we used was hoof cleanser. I would absolutely try it again!

Thanks for the advice, turns out it wasn't a abcess but a badly bruised sole! Hes been upshod for years and had hooves as solid as a rock but the buising was there. I'm tubbing it with salt to bring the bruising out
