Dd turns 18 next month and we’ve got her a beautiful Victorian stock pin as one of her presents. Up until now she’s mainly competed in pony club tie and shirt but stocks look much more elegant! I’m rather bewildered by the variety on offer - can anyone point me in the right direction please?

Hi - as a rule of thumb pale stocks are worn with black/navy jackets (think white or cream) and coloured stocks with tweed. I know a lot of purists frown on ready tied but, honestly, they are a god-send! I have used both and my tie-it-yourself ones never look very tidy!

A very good place to look is www.ridingstockmarket.com - they have every conceivable type of stock. For wearing with tweed jacket I have a couple of the small polka dot cotton stocks in navy and dark green and they look very smart! I also have a couple of white/cream ones with some subtle bling to wear with a black jacket.

If you decide to go tie-it-yourself, the cotton ones I find best as the knots don't slip as much when you're tying them.
