Pony won’t eat feed with supplement in it?

Any tips?

She’s on a new joint supplement for arthritis recommended by our vet.

She has a bowl of chaff and some micronised linseed and a sachet of Danillon in the mornings which she eats no problem

She then has chaff and micronised linseed again for tea with her scoop of supplement which she refuses to eat since we’ve started with the new supplement.

We give it to her wet, I’ve tried adding all sorts of fruit/veg, a squirt of honey, but she still won’t eat it

Once we’ve got past the 10 day loading period it’s only half a scoop which I’m hoping she won’t be able to taste so much.

The supplement is mega £ so I don’t really want to waste it

Thanks

Have you tried making a cuppa mint tea and letting it cool, removed tea bag and adding to feed To damped? Helps encourage my pony to eat when get had a horrible tasting supplement. Depending upon amount of feed you might find you need more but you can scale up as needed. Might be worth a try.

Or making a small jam sandwich with dry bread. Put the supplement on the jam.

Thanks!

That’s a fab idea - will give it a try

She’s a bit suspicious of human food.

She won’t eat Pringles, biscuits, KitKats, cake, crisps, sandwiches, etc.

She ate watermelon once and now behaves like it’s out to kill her and stuff like LikIts scare the crap out of her

I’ve used apple juice before in the feeds to get d pony to eat stuff. Or sugar beet if that’s an option?

Floralnomad · 27/04/2020 16:15

You could try a small amount of molasses or sugar beet although I will say that one of our late horses was very picky and we tried various supplements that she wouldn’t eat whatever you mixed in .

Thanks all Flowers

Tried apple juice tonight and had success. Took half a carton to dampen it up enough though, she’ll be off her tits if I give her that every day 😂

Will try and get some mint tea tomorrow

I’ll get some molasses next time I go to the feed store

Thanks!

Ahh apple juice works again! Glad you had some success

Apple sauce, out the jar, take a little bit and mix it all up in their feed
