Saddle or Pad?

Thinking about getting DS his first pony and doing the sums, went to price up a saddle but came across lots of cub saddles and pads. When I was a child I never remember these being around so I know nothing about them. He's 4, very petite and rides in a normal saddle at riding school. Are these cub saddles or felt pads better? They're certainly cheaper!

The cub saddles are fine for tiny tots who are literally just going for a pony ride, as they effectively hold the child in place like a chair, but I'd say at 4 and getting his own pony he'd want to start to learn to use proper leg aids and develop an independent seat which he'll only be able to do in a proper saddle. So unless you are happy to buy both then I'd go for the saddle...

Thanks Maxelly, I didn't understand the difference, sounds like a normal saddle will be a better investment.

Have a look on Facebook or Instagram for Kizzie and Etties Ponies. It’s an account run by a horsey mum and her two young children. She has done some excellent posts on what tack they use
