Dd wants to take her loan horse out and about - x-country schooling, jumping clinics, local competitions etc and I’m trying to work out the best way of getting them there.

Her horse is a very sweet-natured ISH, 16hh. Our car is a Mercedes e-class estate.

Would a trailer be ok or would it be better to hire a self-drive horsebox? My driving licence is ok for up to 7.5 tons although I’ve never actually driven anything bigger than a transit van. Any advice would be very welcome as this feels like quite a steep learning curve!

Does your car tow? I have a trailer and find it pretty easy just to hook up and go. It’s worked out cheaper over the long term then hiring a 3.5 every time I want to go out as round here it’s about £60-100 and sometimes I’m out twice a week.

There’s a thread by someone called ROG on the horse and hound forum where he’ll work out what you can tow.

Thanks ImBrian - do you have a car or 4x4? And how easy was it to drive when you started?

You can get a taster day with a trailer instructor to see if you like it. That way you haven't spent out and get a few tips too!
