How to break 11hh pony

Hi all. I have an 11 hander. She's 4. I've had her since a yearling. I've no idea how to break her. She's lunging and long reining and all that. Should I send her off to be backed? She'll eventually be used for our DD who's only a baby so no rush. I could turn here away for a while.

This is quite often an issue when you only have small children. When our 12 hand section A needed breaking we sent her away to a specialist.

In an ideal world you'd know a competent teenager who could lie across her and get her started but finding one may be an issue.
When will your DD be ready to ride her? You're probably going to need an older child to rider her regularly anyway as your DD won't be doing much more than 5 minute hacks to start with.

In your situation I'd probably leave her through the summer and then get her ridden away in the Autumn before giving her the Winter off to mature.

Young adult I know who is very competent and experienced and short and slim, regularly takes small ponies for breaking and schooling. Lives in Herefordshire.
She runs a schooling and competition business and is lovely.

By the way all show producers break ponies over the Winter - that is what they do in the off season. If you live near one give them a call..

Get a professional to do a professional job. There are plenty of small adults who specialise in ponies who will give the pony a good start.
