As title. It has been a fraught week, since Tuesday when the vet came out, to today, when he was PTS. Not particularly old, but after assessment, it was clear he was in a lot of pain. Suffer no more, my horsey.

So sorry to hear that. As much as you’ll miss him, it’s better that he’s no longer in pain.

Thanks HRH, I needed to hear that. Vet was proposing treatment, but after full nerve-blocking (3.5 hrs! ) It was clear he had pain & problems in many areas. Watching him try to trot with sore front feet was heartbreaking.

You definitely did the right thing. There’s a horse at the stables I keep my fellow at who has been lame for 8 years. He can’t even go out so is kept in his box all day bar 2 three minutes walks around the yard a day. He’s diet is full of painkillers. And yet his owner won’t put him down. It’s heartbreaking for everyone.

You’ve done the best and kindest thing by him, it’s the final act of love. I’m so sorry for your loss, I hope you have lots of happy memories with him.

Remember that when an animal is in pain, it's better to let them go a day too soon than a day too late. You did your boy the ultimate kindness today, and while your own pain will last a long time, he would be grateful for your decision

I'm so sorry but I agree. You have done exactly the right thing. My sister has lost a couple of horses. If they can be treated and rehab and lead a happy and pain free life then great. But if they can't it is better you suffer their loss than that they suffer a miserable life in pain.
It's hard though.

Thanks, chickens well said. He was well looked after & had a good life. PTS is quick & painless. We had some adventures over six years ( first hack was a pub crawl!) & he won a few rosies. He tried his best & enjoyed his jumping. I was shocked to realise how much pain he had been coping with, but it finally got to be too much.
Yes HRH I would never want to be that person. We did a Bute trial before the vet’s assessment, but it had absolutely no effect.

Oh I am so sorry for you. He is pain free, hope that can comfort you.

I'm so sorry, it hurts to have to make that decision. But when it's the right one at least you do know that it's only you who hurts now and he won't hurt any more. When I had to have my mare PTS my yard owner gave me a bottle of fizz to drink to celebrate her life which was a lovely thought, can you do something to celebrate all you've shared together?

Liz had a long think about this. I think the best celebration will be a tribute post on FB, which I am working up to. He was not a competition horse, had soundness issues from the outset, but we did lots of hacking in interesting places and he did win a few rosettes. I also had dressage lessons on him with a top class dressage rider that helped me greatly. He tried his best.

It’s very hard, but you have done the best thing for him. Remember the good times.

I had to make a similar call 2 yrs ago with my boy who was only 6. Kissing spine made his life quiet miserable and painful at times. The kindest thing i could do for him was to stop the pain. He had a breakfast which included a shed load of painkillers, 6 hours out in a rich green field and a belly full of grass. I swear his last day was happy and he never suffered a moment's pain again. The only gift i could offer.

Big hugs and i'm so sorry for your loss. You took away all the pain, its the kindest thing you could possibly do.
