Wrong hacking choice on a rainy day

I have had my loan horse for about 2 mths now and all has been going well.
Today it was raining, kind of fine drizzly rain and a bit windy too. I don't mind riding in the rain, but I made the wrong route choice.
I could have gone completely off road round some farm tracks but instead chose to ride down to the village and back.
Oh dear. Although good in traffic, she hated the swishing noise of cars passing through the puddles. By the time I turned to come home, she was trying to jog and every time I tried to steady her she was chucking her head and going sideways. Thankfully there is a wide grass verge so I moved onto that when a car came. Traffic isn't heavy but some were a bit too fast, or slowed but started to accelerate while still next to me.
I was thankful to get off at the yard.
This is a fairly lighthearted post. I didn't really feel in danger, but I am a bit nervous sometimes, so am annoyed with myself for my poor route choice!

If its any consolation, all mine hate hacking in the rain. Add in a bit of wind too and it makes for unhappy horses! If I HAVE to ride in the rain I stick to a bit of schooling in the arena. I went for a ride round the farm a little while ago when the weather was threatening. It came down in torrents, lashing sideways when I was about 300m from the farm yard. I honestly thought my mare was going to lose the plot, chuck me off and gallop back to the stables. She didn't know whether to buck, rear or spin and bolt! I somehow managed to keep her going forward to the farmyard and had to shelter in a tractor shed for 10-15 minutes until it eased to lightish, then felt safe to go back out again.

She just hates rain stinging into her face!

Two of ours hate the swishing noise of tyres in the wet. Two couldn't give a toss. and the baby one decides each time whether leaping in the air is required or not. At least you know now which you've got!

Yes, I won't be making that mistake again!

One of mine loathes the rain too - I once came back from a hack doing the last half mile backwards , because it was easier and less aggravation than him trying to banana into oncoming traffic !

He hates the rain even when in the field - the moment it starts raining he charges onto the yard and stands with his head into his stable door if he knows I'm at home , and waits for me to notice! Not that he's spoilt , oh no .

Mine used to run inside at the first drop of rain, and would only move arse into rain whatever you asked him to do.

I used to volunteer at a riding school. Went on hack recently with 16.2 OTTB. Rain started, right on cue. Let's just say that my arms were very sore from all the head tossing and trying to hold him back by the time we got home!
