Washing rugs clogging up washing machine

Title almost says it all! Every time I wash our pony's rugs the machine gets clogged up with hair. I'm sure I read on a thread on here about a bag you can put the rug in before putting it in the machine and the bag collects all the hair or was I dreaming this? If this was just a dream then I'm going to invent a bag like this and go on Dragon's Den.

Not dreaming they are called rug wash bags , I got mine from amazon - I use it for my dogs bits and bobs , we send our horse / pony rugs to a local rug wash which is much easier .

I use the bags but I don't put any rugs in my machine apart from fly rugs and the occasional fleece. The problem with the bags is that the hair collects in them so never goes away - I use a rubber curry comb to get as much hair as I can off the numnahs and saddlecloths before putting them in the bag.

I take the bag out in the garden, turn it inside out and give it a good shake. Most of the hair seems to come out.

Bag arrived. Was so excited to try it I didn't use the curry comb. Bag worked a treat but yes, lots of hair stuck in the rug so next time I'll definitely use a damp curry comb on it first. The hair was quite funny really; some of it had gone into a massive clump that looked like a giant cotton wool pad.

It's so good to be able to wash the rugs without worrying about the machine. The pony has sweet itch and so needs to be covered up all summer. The instructions with the sweet itch rug said to wash weekly to keep it in good condition. Not sure if this is excessive but at least I can do it now!
