advice re grazing please

We have let our field to two girls and their four horses. There are no stables and its simply grazing. The field has a public footpath by the side of it but the field itself is completely enclosed. We have never let the field
before, but the girls have been trimming their horses and leaving all the hair etc where it falls ie mostly on the footpath. I have to say it looks rather untidy as the horses are mostly cream. Is this usual to leave it where it drops are am I within my rights to ask them to collect it all in a carrier bag or something. Thanks for any advice.

Is it actually clippings from tail/legs etc or is it just winter coat hair from grooming? This time of year the horses will be losing a lot of hair but it usually blows away/ gets trodden in pretty quickly. I think it might be a bit odd to ask them to clear it up if its just normal shedded hair. Maybe if its trimmed tail etc but they won't be doing it very often if thats the case.
However, I guess if the footpath is on your land you can ask them to do whatever you want!

If there is a lot of it, it is probably there horses loosing there winter coats - it's a huge amount of hair.
Also you will probably find where the horses roll and lie down you end up with a lot of hair at this time of year

Sorry - hit send too soon.....what I was going to say it where the horses roll they can often get up and it looks like they have carpeted the grass - my friends cob leaves huge patches of hair around his paddock.

If there was a hard standing area where they groomed and then could sweep it up, that would be one thing, but to try to pick it out of grass would be almost impossible.

We leave it for the birds. It's quite funny when I'm giving dhorse a good groom and there are crows running around with huge beakfuls of hair. I shouldn't worry OP, it won't stay there for long.

I'm going against the flow here .... When we clip, trim, and groom we gather and bin the hair.

At the very least, if it gets in the field it blows all over the place, and I wouldn't want hair in my dinner.
At worse, it can be one method of spreading skin infections (obviously only in the presence of a skin infection), so I just think it's good practice to clear up as you go along.

Having said that, it might be more difficult if you have some shaggy ponies, out 24/7 ... then you get 'roll' patches in the grass, as they roll off some winter coat.

Are you sure it's trimmings, Op, and not just where the ponies are rolling.

The mass moult started here a few weeks ago , and I've taken to grooming the horses in the field rather than on the yard because of the sheer amount of hair coming off . I also have numerous hairy patches all over the field , which fortunately get cleared up by the birds quite quickly . Its infuriating . Twice I've had to declog the washing machine ! t least its only once a year !

Plomino get a Horsewear Washbag. It's brilliant, I wash all horsey stuff (numnahs, vests etc) in it as well as my yard coat, jodhs and anything that gets hairy during moulting season. Everything gets clean but you don't have any hair in the washing machine.

Really ? I shall look it up as all the hair's doing my head in . What with that and someone talking about a furminator today , I can see a spending going on . Where did you get it from ?

I think it was probably Robinson's but I've had it for years so it's hard to remember. If you google you will find that lots of saddlers plus Amazon etc do them. They come in different sizes though so make sure you get one big enough.
