Swollen hind legs

This morning my mare's hind legs are both quite swollen below the hock and into the fetlock. She lives out so it is not due to being in the stable. They are not hot to touch, she is happy for me to touch them and she is sound. Only other thing is that her glands are slightly up in her neck - but that is not entirely unusual for her. Any thoughts on what might be causing the swelling?

I think you need to call the vet asap. If it is something like ulcerative lymphangitis she'll need treatment and pain management.

I'd call the vet out to have a look - my be nothing but better to be safe than sorry x

My horse had this last year, turned out to be a virus. Have you checked for a raised temperature? Mine didn't seem ill otherwise and still had a good appetite etc but we obviously had to keep him away from the others for a while and not ride him.

We had to have blood tests, because of the neck swellings there was some concern it could be strangles, but it turned out not to be the case. I'm not sure what it actually was (sorry Blush) but the vet said it was like Herpes in that the horse can carry the virus with no ill effects until something triggers it, usually stress. Dhorse had just moved yards and came out of the trailer in a bit of a state so we put it down to that. Just thought that might be worth mentioning what with it being firework season and all...

Not saying it is that btw, I'm not a vet! Just suggesting a possibility Smile.

Any news? Have you had the vet out?

Sorry everyone, busy day! Thanks for all your replies. Took her out on a short jaunt and the swelling went down so haven't called vet as yet. Will see how she is tomorrow.
