I rescued a horse that had a foal 3 weeks later, alls gone well, foal is gorgeous :). Anyway the thought of weaning is terrifying its not something I have any experience with. I live on a small farm where I could separate but im worried they might hear each other. Is it best to gradually wean, or go cold turkey. I have no top doors on stables so need to leave the foal out. Should I send mum away?. Any advice or own experiences would be great, thankyou xx

I was lucky I had a Shetland I could borrow, just put the foal and little one in a small paddock.
And started bring the mare back to work. Now as yours is a rescue you don't know much about her. I would just start her slowly do some long reining, lunging will and let her stand with some tack on.
Bringing the mare back to work at the same time will give her some thing to think about, if it turns out that she has not been started, this will be the best time to break her.
Pls don't worry, find the foal a play mate and get the mare working.
Exciting times

We always have another horse/ foal to wean ours. Just started doing this years foals. Had four days of screaming from them both and having mare in box then mare out and foal in box and know they are out together in next door fields. This year it went very well and wasn't that bad. Some years it's really hard work.
