really scary experience today... left the house with the trailer hitched up (luckily no horses on board) and as I pulled out the trailer came off the tow-hitch and careered straight into the gate opposite.

no-one hurt and no damage done but such a horrid scare and a wake-up call - I've been hitching up trailers for years and never had anything like this happen before...

my old trailer in the UK had a saftey cord attached which would put on the handbrake should this happen but my new one (I'm abroad at the moment) doesn't have this and only has a saftey chain that loops over the tow hitch which obviously isn't enough..

Don't think I will be going anywhere until I sort out a better back up system...

having a large glass of wine to get over this... still thinking 'what if'

Yikes, that is scary .

I do worry about something like that happening when towing.

I think I would have had a heart attack with the shock. You poor thing, just shows that those breakaway cords are useful.

Eek, v scary. Although if it makes you feel better, we once had a wheel fall off our fully loaded trailer en route to a common riding ride out... Dad had forgotten to tighten the wheel nuts.

Luckily we limped along on three wheels to the venue unscathed and dad managed to go back and find it but I have never been so terrified. It was the talk of the town too, very embarrassing!

thanks guys - such a scary experience... will be double and triple checking the tow hitch every time I hitch up now... frightening stuff!
