Helmet too old?

Just had my first riding lesson for 25 years. And pulled out my old hat (cross country style crash cap) which is about same age! Is it still safe or do I need to buy a new one pronto?!

I wouldn't keep it. Apart from the fact that techology has moved on a great deal since then, they do deteriorate over time. It might look ok but structurally it could be considerably weakened.

Treat yourself to a smart new one .

Get a new one. If it has been getting hotter and colder over the years it could affect the inside so could be weaker. Also your head size/shape has probably changed.
Get a new one they even do them in Tescos and Aldi reasonably cheap now

Even borrow a school one till you get a new one.

Thanks everyone, that pretty clear then! Great to be back in saddle again, encouraged by putting DD, 3.5, on a pony. Might be an expensive move long term!!!

You can always borrow one off the RS for a few times but I wouldn't use such an old hat. Standards get upgraded all the time and hats deteriorate anyway. I change my hat every 2-3 years (as well as anytime I land on it!).

Yes you need a new hat. BETA website has good information on hats. Make sure you get one that confirms to the highest standard not just the minimum and get it properly fitted.

New one. Definitely a new one. Don't take any chances. Not worth it.

Tried one of the RSI hats on today and realised they are half the weight of mine. You're all right, the technology really has changed!
