Was at a competition today (dressage). Got talking to the daughter and husband of one of the other competitors in our class. The husband told me that his wife is 75 and took up straight dressage on her 20 year old former broodmare 10 years ago when she (the wife) had to give up jumping having lost an eye in a horse-related accident .

That lady came 4th in the Prix St George today. .

dolomites yes that's right, his name is Horeshi Hoketsu. He was 71 when he came to London 2012.

Chap at my yard is 83 (or possibly 84) and hacks for miles on his quarter horse at all paces (I galloped side by side with him ). He outlived his last horse, missed it so much so got another 2 yrs ago.

He gives me inspiration

When my sister lived in her last house her neighbour was a man in his nineties who could only walk with sticks. One day she got chatting to him and found out that he'd been a polo player among other things for many years. Not only that but he still rode whenever he got the chance! He had to drive all the way to Wales (from south coast England) because he couldn't find a riding stables any nearer who would let him ride due to insurance issues.

countingto10 - are we at the same yard? Does he also hunt two or three times a week all through the season?

I don't know why I put myself through it but OP, did you find out exactly what happened to that woman's eye?

mitchy yes she was knocked over and kicked while leading /handling a horse. Her eye socket was smashed and she lost the eye ( all this according to her husband).

argh what an injury, we are so much more vulnerable on the ground than up there on board

That's so true mitchy. A friend of ours got kicked in the head by her young horse as she turned him out. She lay in the field unconscious for 2 hrs with a fractured skull before being found by her friend who was coming to have lunch with her. Went to hospital in the air ambulance and was in ICU for 2 weeks. 4 years later she still hasn't recovered fully.

A friend of my cousin was killed by her horse - left 2 small DCs.

No Mitchy not the same yard but your chap does sound similar , chap at my yard even went on a round up of wild ponies on one of the Devon moors on his current horse, came off at a gallop, landed in a bush! Said horse was quite excited - we did point out that most horses would be excited in that situation .

Some of those accidents are horrendous
