Back protectors and show jackets?

DD1 is 11 and has started riding in local shows. She had been given a show jacket which she is desperate to wear but we are not sure if the back protector she normally wears should go over or under the jacket or be left off completely.
We're only talking clear round competitions at the moment not cross country but what's the norm these days? When I rode as a child we never had anything like that anyway.

DD doesn't ride with a back protector regularly so doesn't do so for showing classes (including workers) and show jumping. Those who do wear them (have only seen them on in the worker ring) wear them over their jackets.

Thanks, have suggested this but apparently it's the worst thing ever. She wears a back protector for lessons as everyone else seems to roun here. Maybe I'll let her off just for shows hmm.

DD hacks out in her back protector and she'd wear one over her jacket if doing workers or riding youngsters. For flat classes she doesn't wear one and she's stopped wearing one when schooling her show pony as well.

Please excuse my ignorance Butkin, I'm assuming a flat class doesn't involve jumping at all. Would your daughter wear one if she was jumping in a show?

DD doesn't ride unless she is wearing her hat and back protector, and that includes showing classes. She wears hers over her show jacket.

Yes DD competes her ponys exclusively in flat classes, without jumping, ie M&M First Riddens, Junior Riders, Section B Opens, Show Hunter Ponies and 128 Show Ponies. She doesn't wear a back protector for any of these classes and no other children do either.

However if she was competing in working hunter pony (which she has once and may well do so again) then she'd wear her back protector over her jacket for the jumping part and then take it off for the flat part.

She once did a show jumping class and she wore it then as well over her jacket.

I agree with Callisto that you shouldn't get penalised for wearing a back protector in any show class. Just that we don't tend to see any children wearing them. We're actually considered unusual in the showing world in that she wears hers for hacking out and schooling.

Thank you for all the replies. We have come to an agreement that if the class involved jumping she will either wear her protector over her jacket or just a shirt, whichever she is more comfortable with. If its dressage she can go without and be a bit smarter.
I totally get where she is coming from with her objections but she is too young to really understand the consequences of a bad fall and if we can protect her a bit I just feel we should. Anyway it's that or no shows till she's 18, mums rules or nothing .

Mine don't even go near the ponies without back protectors and hats,a kick in the chest can kill.I'm quite relaxed about other stuff,but that is non negotiable.They have both worn them under jackets at shows before now.
