Just wondering what kind of horses and ponies you lovely people have.

Tell me a bit about your horse, such as size, age, breed, how long you have had them, what you do with them, what you especially love about them, any bad habits or funny stories about them

DS has an 11hh welsh section A pony, who is mud grey. He's 5, and is a right cheeky object, but coming along nicely.

He loves rolling in the mud, and pretending that he is 17hh and fighting with the big boys. Its hilarious watching his herd hoolying round their field, then stopping to watch the kids football in the next field.

I love his huge hair, his cheeky little face, and the way he canters across the field whinnying at me. I could do without the mudlocks and his urge to put everything in his mouth.

Nell (DH's horse) 16hh 17 year old Belgian Draft who's just a happy hacker and loves going to the pub. I've taught DH to ride on her and she has the most amazing marching walk. She's got some issues with her legs so we have to be very careful with her work, and she's recovering from cancer surgery at the minute so she's been a worry, but she and DH are very much in love and she'll be his girl for the rest of her life.

Megan (mine) is 14 years old, 14hh and is a Fell/cob. She's lovely, well manered, low maintenance, hacks out beautifully and does a nice dressage test and jumps a bit when I feel brave. I was a really nervous rider when I got her and she's totally looked after me and helped me find my confidence so she's my forever horse

Ben is 13.3hh, a welsh/arab and nearly 20. He was GD's first pony and is on loan to a lovely girl and still on our yard. He's the ultimate professional little schoolmaster, very safe and sensible, but happily jumped 1m20 at camp last time they went. When current loaner outgrows him we'll see if we can find someone who wants a nice safe hack as he'll retire from jumping after next season (he still enjoys it a lot, but there has to come a time!).

Cassie is a 14.2 8 year old Connemara/tb who's out on loan with view to buy, and they are very likely to buy her, so not really ours now.

Then we've recently got Caprio on loan for GD. (no pic yet) He's a 15hh, palamino, 7 years old, very green, very forward and can be bolshy. He scared his less confident owner so has hardly done anything for a year. He's really nice on the ground, very friendly and actually quite a genuine horse who just needs lots of very clear riding, his brain occupying and teaching what's wanted. We've also found the makings of a good athletic jump, and he's working well towards an outline. Early days yet but we may well buy him as GD loves him (and the more he's naughty the more she loves getting him in the school and sorting him out)

I could go on all day about the horses (and my family would say I often do)

I have an 8 year old TB. He is bloody lovely! I've only had him 7 months so we are still getting to know each other really. We have had our ups and downs, the biggest down being when I changed his saddle and he decided he didn't like the new one and bucked me off, but we are definitely getting there now!

I am hoping to do a bit of showjumping with him eventually, although that is a way off yet. We have been having jumping lessons for the last month or so. He is brilliant, and will pretty much jump anything I point him at, although he does need a fair bit of reassurance. I am somewhat less brilliant however.

8 year old black tb. 15.2. When she's good, she's very good. We try to forget the bad times lol!!

Then a 16 year old welsh cob. She's just fabulous!!

20 something yo brown 15.2 little horse/big pony, he is my great great great great love

and a, must be 9 now? skewbald (blue roan/white or pink) chunky 13.2 who has grown on me over the years

7 yo 15.2hh Bay Roan cob with masses of mane and tail, a real head-turner with lovely paces. He hasn't turned out to really be the right horse for me (he grew much bigger than intended for a start) but he is so beautiful and can be a darling on the rare occasion when he wants to, I haven't screwed myself up to sell him yet, even though I really need a 14hh plodder that I can trust share with ds.
We also have in the family a rising 24, 14hh golden dun welshie with white legs and blaze. Ex showpony and knows it! He is a complete gentleman to handle and bombproof in traffic but has a wicked buck in him in open spaces.
Lastly little black shetland, almost 30 and a total angel in every way apart from beating up big cob if she gets the chance. She is my favourite but don't tell the others .

19 year old grey Arab mare. Lovely to look at, kind and honest, but can't live in- goes completely doolally in a stable, so a constant battle against weight loss and mud fever in the winter.

2 year old black dales project pony. Very keen to please, but a real baby with everything to learn.

Firstly, a lovely, well bred sec A mare by Pendock Legend. Late teens, a dream of a LR pony, crap as a FR so has been resting, having foals. Second one due may. Hoping DD will get back on once she is weaned, now she has confidence and ability.
Then, our wonderful, gorgeous, beloved big black shetland. She is hooge! Full up to height, wears a 5'3 rug, cob sized bridle and rides like a 13'2! Great as a FR/LR/Anything. Not long legged enough to keep up with big beasts on hacks, so currently at grass/entertaining small people.
Cuurrently in work, a 13hh New Forest filly in fleabitten grey. A character filled little girl. Born wild in the forest, quirky, a bit of a marmite pony. Can be ridden by anyone, novice or expert, who gels with her. If you dont gel, you might as well give up!
Next, our boy. 2 in may, home bred from the Legend mare and Tiffwyl Moonshine, and a nice dark grey. Not a big boy, will probably be nice as a LR, lots of charm. a right little bugger
Latest arrival is a pretty little piebald cob x shetland filly, 2 in may. Bought for a song by DD from Dragon Driving. Dad apparently was the biggest stallion in the field. Hoping she will make 13hh and possibly be DDs future ride. Not looking that likely right now, as she is growing up quite nicely, but is quite short coupled. Ok for DD for a while as she has a tiny bum and can fit a wee saddle, but may be broken to drive and/or sold on.

I have spotty pony. 17.2/3hh (can't be arsed measuring, what's the point, it's bloody huge) 3/4 warm blood x tb. Tobiano with spots on the white bits. 7yo, thick as two short planks but willing and likes to please. Slight drama queen regarding injuries. Does county shows in the coloured classes but can turn his hand to jumping/dressage. Also hacks to the pub.
He is an absolute bog monster, he doesn't roll, he wallows in mud, currently has 3 inch mud ringlets in his mane and his tail could stand up on its own. He is currently away on show livery whilst I wait for this baby to arrive and I miss him so badly :0(

New Forest is a bog monster too. We call her 'The bog of eternal stench'! In winter she goes everywhere with a heat haze of stench! Rolling in shit is her hobby!

I have a fine grey stallion, capable of many tricks. His name is Silver.

Bob the black cob with white feathers 16h heavyweight who is 13 and Jester the 12 yr old middleweight 15.3h grey cob who has pink skin with black spots over his body and face. Looks like a zebra cross dalmatian when he's clipped! Also called Jester for a reason...

Love the bog monsters!!

My welsh doesn't really roll. She doesn't really do turn out. Especially not in mud/rain/heat etc. She melts......

at Silver.

Dd's grey Arab loves mud, and rubs her face in it. Her mane and tail turn nicotine yellow and straggly in November and stay that way til first bath. She loses condition in the cold and looks like a coat stand. While remaining relentlessly cheerful and up for anything.

My hoss, 16hh chestnut roan mare, 12yo, sweet, kind, lovely girl. Messy in the stable (wees several gallon every night) and is a bit short on brakes. Had her 7 years and will never sell her.

2 hairy wee Dartmoor mares, a chestnut and a dark bay, 11hh and 10hh respectively, both good LR. Owned the chestnut for 18mnths and the bay for more years than I care to remember , maybe 12 years?

And collecting a new horse in the morning for my 14 yo dsd, a 15hh dark bay mare, 14 yo.

I'm glad you got the Silver reference, Seeker. I had terrible doubts that everyone on here might be too young to have the faintest idea...

14.2hh welshxarab with possibly a bit of TB chucked in, rescued as a yearling, intended to back and sell on, but I have come to the conclusion that I am rubbish at selling on

I keep eyeing up sec As, as had one as a child and would like one for small person, when she is old enough. OH insists that the Mamas and Papas furry horse on wheels will be sufficient, I disagree....

I'd also like to get something dressageish in the next couple of years and get out and about again...

I wish I had a horse! Desperate to get back riding again and this thread is making me v v green!

we have a 15 hh Appaloosa who is slid buckskin with lovely dapples. He's 9 and I've had him since he was 6 months. He's my steady guy. we mostly just go into the mountains and hope to go camping this year! He's a big talker, in your pocket sort of horse but he's not spooky and gives rides to the kids quite happily.

Our other horse is a 14.2 Spotted saddle horse. hes very comfy to ride and also good in the mountains. He's 16, and we got him last year when his owner couldn't keep her horses anymore due to illness.

They are both great

I share a 16.2 chestnut tb, who is just 20!
He is so sweet and dopey on the ground, but does have moments when ridden when recalls his past life as a hunter/ eventer
Loves a plod around with a small child on him, but hates to hack out alone
And jumps everything as if it were a 6ft fence even trotting poles

I think he's nearing retirement now, so am thinking a nice chunky 15hh cob next

You know, I have a chestnut tb with no white legs in my dreams. Then I get to the yard and see the reality which is 4 white legs and a white tail covered in mud/piss/shit and I want to weep. When I was looking at horses I wanted a chestnut riding horse. I came back with Spotty. Wtf happened there? Needless to say the next horse, hopefully 20 odd years down the line will not have any white on its legs at all. Ever. Not even a hair!

Twatty - I did that!! My welsh has a big White face and four big White socks.

My black horse is just black. Pure black. No whiteness anywhere!! It's wonderful!!

i have Tigger a 15.1hh 9 yr old welsh x hackney x appaloosa gelding. bought as a 3yr old backed by me. he is spooky and silly but i love him to bits. he went on loan for 2yrs when i had my first DS and did a lot of BSJA, BD and a BE90 event. i have lost my nerve jumping though so we mostly hack

and i have Ethel a 13.1hh 4yr old mare. Bought as a 2yr old off Bodmin moor completely unhandled. She was backed as a 3yr old then turned away for 9 months. She is now coming back into work. Amazing little mare brave and lets my 2yr old DS do anything with her
