I've posted another thread about beginning to muck out etc with my neighbour at her stables
I really want to take lessons again (after a three year break) and I hope to go to the stables every Saturday morning. What kit do I need? I've got a helmet, jodhpurs, gaiters and short boots- although I do find them uncomfortable and a bit stiff. Can anyone recommend any brands? Also, can I ride around the school wearing mucker boots?

You have pretty much what you need, although some people (I am one of them!) like to wear a body protector as well.

Appropriate footwear for riding has to have a smooth sole, so the foot can easily slip out of the stirrup in case of a fall, a small heel so the foot is discouraged from slipping into the stirrup (which can become exceptionally dangerous in case of a fall) and when you place your foot in the stirrup you should be able to comfortably fit two thumbs either side (so the foot can slip easily out again). Stirrups come in different sizes so if riding in an RS (different horses, different saddles, different stirrups) it's worth checking the size against your footwear every time.

Most leather boots are a bit stiff to start with. Try cleaning them with leather conditioner and wearing them around the house.

It's a bit like children - for every recommendation you'll get an 'oh no I wouldn't do/buy that!'

I like short boots and half chaps - close fitting leather ones are best but expensive.

Mucker boots will be fine as long as your stirrups are the right size for your feet - too small and the press stud fastenings could catch.

Sounds obvious but make sure you have a waterproof coat with a 2-way zip. If the zip won't unfasten at the bottom then your top will 'balloon' out uncomfortably in front of you.

For this time of year you can buy inexpensive fleece riding cloves.

Do check your helmet is up to current safety specs. If you need a new helmet or any other bits and pieces Tesco riding stuff is great.

If your boots are the ones with elastic they will feel more comfortable when the elastic 'gives' a bit too.

I always wear a body protector.

Get a new hat as they deteriorate over time. I think you are supposed to replace them every couple of years. Go to a good tack shop to make sure it gets fitted properly and also ask to make sure it's up the the highest safety standards. I think the most recent standard is the PAS 015 2011 but double check that with the tack shop

I've just been over to the stables and Lando and I had a great time. The weather has been to bad to ride but I'm enjoying building a relationship with him.

A good pair of gloves and dress in layers as even if it is freezing you will still get warm pretty quick
