Hair for first ridden

DD (9) will be competing in First Ridden for the first time on a friend's pony and I just wondered how I should do her hair It is brown and longish, should it be plaited or in bunches or a hair net and what sort of ribbons should I use? Bows with ribbons attached, plain ribbons or plain bows? Very confused!

Thanks for your input, my friend has guided me on the rest of the outfit but is away on hols at the moment so I can't ask and am trying to be organised!

Many moons ago when i did first pony i would have my hair in a neat bun, hair net on and a scrunchie (sp?) that matched the browband on. (Or if i had a plain browband on it would be a navy blue scrunchie)

When i have been at show recently i have noticed the girls have had long plaits in with bows.

You must have plaits, with ribbons that match her tie her lapel rosette and the brow band. And you must have canary Jodhpurs and a green jacket.

The jacket should be navy show ponies/riding horses/hacks etc navy,

Cobs/hunters/m&ms etc would be tweed

How long is her hair? DD is at the older end of first ridden and wears her hair in a pony tail with ribbon that matches her tie. Younger girls wear it in pigtails with bows on the end or if their hair is long enough have the pigtails turned back up and stitched in with bows (we call it pretzel hair).

Wouldn't be doing buns/hairnets for first ridden personally.

DD rides M&Ms so lapel rosettes and pretty browbands are not allowed

DD is determined to do first ridden next year on her pony so I have all of this to look forward too. Though at least I don't have to wear a tweed monstrosity if she's off the lead rein.

Ha Callisto! I spent 45 minutes last week in serious conversation about which colour tweed jacket would go best with new pony.....At the time it seemed totally reasonable -DD still maintains it was.

marialuisa it is a M&M pony so glad I don't have to worry about the lapel rosette. Her hair is almost waist length but has a mind of it's own and I don't think would take kindly to turning back up without falling out everywhere.

If I plait it and put ribbons is it better to just tie plain ribbons into bows, use the ready made bows with hanging ribbons (look a bit like rosettes to me) or use the ready made bows without ribbons that I think just clip on?

Don't tie the ribbons in bows straight onto hair,I learnt from experience that they slide off.Now I tie the ribbon bow onto the elastic hair band instead.

We wore the 'wrong colour' tweed because it was what we had and I wasn't buying another one.DD2 wore her PC tie and I made bows out of purple and gold ribbon to match the tie-it looked very smart.

Don't worry too much about how you do the bows, if they look neat you'll be fine!

DD rides M&M FR (see palomino pic in my profile). She wears sometimes wears a fake bun with scrunchy to match her tie. She has also worn it in a pony tail with ribbon. Definitely no fake lapel rosette. She does wear a tie pin which - although not previously seen on M&Ms - is becoming more the norm.

When she was younger we used to do her hair into two plaits and then turn them up into tight round bangs.
