Anyone gone camping with horses/ponies?

Dh keeps going on about taking the ponies and going camping overnight.Hmm.He is only planning on going a couple of miles, down onto my dad's fields and we already have saddlebags so one of the ponies can carry some stuff.I hate camping, but might be persuaded for the DDs sake.

Has anyone done this before? Did you tether the horses overnight or leave them in the field? Dpony is easy to catch normally, but in a 40 acre field she might suss that she can get the better of me......She isn't fond of fires either,so a camp fire might send her running for the hills.Perhaps I can convince DH it is a bad idea?

I'm not a camping fan either, but if you have electric fencing kit you may be able to mark out a smallish enclosure for the pony. It isn't hugely expensive (if you don't buy the electric bit!).

Thank you frostyfingers, might give that a try, although dpony knows when the fence isn't on and leans on it until the stakes fall or snap.Hmm

Ah, I've got one of those - walks up to the unit and if it isn't ticking just keeps walking, it costs me a fortune in batteries!

We are planning on going to somewhere you can take your own horse and camp this summer - but with a paddock provided !. But I wouldn't tether unless they are used to it tbh.

I can imagine dpony joining us in the tent Smile

Did it in the rockies, hobbled one so the others didn't leg it.
