Importing from ireland help?

A friend has seen a horse she is interested in.
However, It is located in ireland. Her partner is able to drive a box so they were thinking of hiring a self drive and going over to fetch it themselves.

We are a little confused though and seem to be finding mixed information.
Could anyone here advise on what is involved in importing? Specifically, Is there additional paperwork required to bring the horse into england? Any sort of vets certificates and fees etc?

I moved to NIreland for a couple of yrs but we went through Dublin ports with my 2 on the way over, 3 on the way back!
There was no extra paperwork needed, I think I phoned the ferry company to make sure but all they wanted was passports carried.

I would seriously suggest using a professional transporter. I hired a self drive on the way over and it was a bloody hard slog. Obviously depends where you're going from/to. I hired a 7.5 tonne so the horses had lots of space but even though the windows were open while they were on the ferry they got absolutely dripping in sweat.
On the way back I sent them on a massive HGV which picked them up from us, went via Scotland where they overnighted and delivered looking great the next day. It was a shared journey so they picked up/dropped off other horses on the way but it was significantly cheaper and a lot less traumatic for all involved!

Ditto the advice to hire a professional, on a shared load it will be quite economical (and may well be cheaper than hiring a self drive). Aside from anything else if the seas are rough horses can't travel on the ferry so they would need to make arrangements for livery by the port.

As far as I know there is a simple form to be filled in but the professional should sort it out for them as part of the service. The horse does require a passport as well but that is needed for the sale.
