What do you tow with?

Considering buying a third car (dh has a company car and I have a family car - neither of which can tow) as a towcar as I don't want to drive a 4 x 4 all the time (petrol costs).

Have seen a Cherokee Jeep cdr 2.8 for sale for about 6k.

What do you tow with?

Old Isuzu Trooper LWB. Cost £1,000 5 years ago and has needed very little doing to it since. Passes MOT every year and drives like ... a tractor. But it does the job.

Can tow with my Renault Scenic 1.9TD but it's a bit of a struggle, although I have done it when I needed to.

Ford Ranger. It's ace at towing and has never let me down.

Toyota Landcruiser - fabulous at towing, brilliant car all round but heavy on fuel and tyres!

KIA Sorento, tows 3.5t and lovely to drive.Recently towed 2 x ponies, all their associated tack feed water ect plus 4 passengers off a wet field with no effort at all.It costs about £90 to fill up and that lasts me about a month.

Currently old Nissan Terrano LWB before that old Mitsubishi Pajero SWB. I loved the Pajero, had loads of little extra comforts and towed fab though I never tried 2 big horses. Sadly had to sell it as just not enough space for 2DC's, dog, pram and DH. The Terrano is ok, very basic big, heavy car. Tows great, does the job but probably would've bought something else if I'd had a bigger budget purely for comfort reasons.

Kia Sorento - and find the same as Mirage - we only have the 2.5 diesel and it could pull a bus. Easily tows two 16.3 hunters up hill and down dale. Great both off and on-road.

Only know one person who used a Jeep, and she got rid of it fairly quickly due to issues with electrics.

If you can afford it though, a pre-08 Landcruiser will take on fairly much anything and keep going forever. We didn't get one as it offended me to pay out that much road tax!

Those with a Sorento - is it an old one? Have heard the new ones are not so good for towing.

Mine's an '07 as it was the last year they made a manual one. Seem to remember my research indicated similar (we only bought it last summer) - I think anything up to 2010 model is ok, but worth re-checking.

Also, ditto for the new Landcruiser unfortunately, I wouldn't buy much past '08 for one of those.

The Pajero still has great reviews, as does the Freelander if you're thinking of buying new.

truandrakni · 16/05/2012 19:06

horseylady can I ask what you find the Santa Fe like to tow with?

Mirage · 16/05/2012 19:56

My Sorento is an 07 and the older ones do tow more than the newer, and the automatics are better than manuals.I looked on 'Honest John's' car reviews when I was researching what to buy and it was very informative.

Butkin on here has a SantaFe and says they are the same car as the Sorento.
