Hip replacement and riding.

In short.

I'm would be a novice rider; did basics as a kid. Had a sucessful hip replacement 18 months ago. Promised myself a horse ride to prove I can live life after.

Would you advise a 'Riding for the Disabled establishment' or an understanding public stables?

Have you checked it out with your consultant - I'm sure it would be fine, but just worth asking the question?

I'm sure I heard of a woman who had both hips replaced and she still rode???

I don't want to 'go mad' just to have a sit on a horse while it walks.

Last year when I rode on holiday (been going to same campsite since childhood so always have to ride at on-site stables when I'm there!), there was a man who was telling me he rode there every week. It wasn't his local stable but it was worth the drive as all their horses were so trustworthy and he had to slow down a bit now he'd had his hips replaced . He was quite an elderly gent too but we went over some fairly challenging terrain (think steep, rocky paths with a drop on one side) and I had a job to keep up with him so we could have our conversation!

This was more of a pony-trekking place than a riding school btw.

If your consultants OK with it (I remember my aunt being told she could go skiing afterwards - she was 72 and had never skiied before in her life!!), I would go to a normal riding school.

The lady who bought my colt has had a hip replacement and rides western - I'm not sure how many stables offer this but she says it is much more comfortable for her than an english seat.

I will do research for quiet (AND THIN ) horses. I'll try and google recommendeds in Dorset.
