Girth galls.

dd's pony is very sensitive skinned. She has a sheepskin girth sleeve but still sometimes gets girth galls. Is there anything we can do? We're incredibly careful about tacking her up, stretching her frorelegs first and smoothing the skin obsessively. And dd rides barebck a lot as well. But is there anything else we can do? Has anyone had any success with using surgical spirit to hardennoff the skin?

Try some of the more old fashioned firths. String or balding are always good, string moulds well to the horses shape, and balding is designed to take contact away from the armpits.

G.i.r.t.h.s! Bloody autocorrect!

Agree about balding girth, I had one many years ago that was lovely butter-soft leather which would probably suit your mare (as long as you are obsessive about keeping it clean and supple). Also have you tried out a humane girth? They are designed to adjust slightly to the horse's movement. Haven't tried surgical spirit sorry, although I have heard that it's good for hardening skin so I think I'd be inclined to give it a try.

I agree with others - a lovely leather girth (don't oil the stitching)! - or an old-skool Thelwell-style Stubben string girth.

Have you tried a neoprene girth?

Aaaggggggg! I'm intending to buy the beast a new girth next week- now I can't decide!

I need a new girth as dhorse only has one that still fits him so I spent ages the other day, trawling the internet, trying to decide what to get. Eventually I decided on this one, ordered it then had an email the next day to say it was out of stock, after all that! Still think I'll go for the same thing but will have to have another search for a good price elsewhere.
