Any experience of equine thyroid problems?

OK, so I finally got the vet out for the intermittent lump on DMares neck and vet thinks it is either a goitre or a thyroid tumour. He has said he could do tests but considering DMares age and temperament he is reluctant.

Does anyone have experience of thyroid problems in horses? Specifically lumps - it is currently about the size of a small orange.

TIA.

No, sorry, just bumping for you. Have you decided whether to have tests?

Thanks for the bump, Mitchy.

At the moment I have decided against the tests. I've been googling (dangerous I know) and have decided that, considering her age, if DMare is not being disturbed by the lump it's best to leave as is for the moment. As far as I understand we would need a biopsy for a definitive diagnosis and I don't know how traumatic that would be - any idea?

I think that DMare is showing signs of hypothyroidism as she is much quieter than she used to be and no longer totally scatty but, then again, she might finally be acting like a 21 yo not a 4 yo!

The vet will come out again soon to take another look at her and we will discuss again.

Anyone's experiences appreciated.
