Running through horse field

When I run cross country, my favourite run takes me through a field with four ponies in it (it's a public footpath). One of them tends to come up and get a bit frisky, in a playful sort of way.

I know nothing about horses. What should I do/not do?

Do Not Feed It! You'd be amazed at how many people think this helps!
Ignore and don't make eye contact.
If it bothers you, make yourself big, arms out, stand up, flap your coat.
If it doesn't go away, look it square in the eye, make yourself big and stamp you foot. In herd terms this means 'piss off'!
It's probable that the horse is a youngster and thinks that you are being playful. Stopping running and walking through the field may help.

I would never feed someone else's animal without permission!

I have been walking if he comes up because it's up a hill, but I'll stop talking to him, and give him the stony stare. It seems a shame, because he's a nice little fellow, if bit scary, and gives off "let's play" vibes.

I'm glad you wouldn't feed him, you would be surprised how many people think it is their right! I know it is hard when they look sweet, but young horses don't always realise you aren't another horse, and horse play can be quite rough. Kicking or jumping on you aren't out of the realms of imagination!
OTOH, if this horse is a risk to your safety, his owners shouldn't have put him in a paddock with a footpath in it!

I guess we don't talk about horse play for nothing!

It was the hint of jumpiness that put the wind up me - sort of sitting back on his haunches, and lifting up his front hooves - just a little bit, not a full blown rear up.

I will try piss off in horse language if he comes up again.

Thx Saggy.
