It was appalling, but so bizarre as to be not worth worrying about on a personal level.

The grass in the parade ring had been aerated, apparently, and my gardener DH was wondering if an electrical cable had been laid too close to the surface.

BeenBeta · 12/02/2011 19:01

Metal shoes, the weight of the horse pushing into soft waterlogged ground and a damaged mains electric cable could well be the cause.

People with rubber or leather soles woud be unaffected.

horrific Sad
those poor animals.
all involved must feel terrible......thoughts are with them x

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/02/2011 20:36

:( absolutely awful.

CluckyKate · 12/02/2011 21:08

Terrible thing to happen and very something out of a Dick Francis novel. Most odd.

CaveMum · 12/02/2011 21:47

It's an awful situation. I work in racing and know the team at Newbury fairly well, they will be utterly devastated.

They'll get to the bottom of it, but that won't change the fact that 2 horses have died and at least two others were badly traumatised.

My thoughts are with the lads/lasses that looked after the horses concerned, they will feel the loss mote than the owners and trainers.

SupersonicDave · 13/02/2011 12:44

I used to ride one of the horses that died, was really shocked.

Thought the same about a dick francis novel

Crikey Supersonic :( That must be pretty sad for you, and anyone else who knew them really.

So sad, horrific thing to happen to such amasing creatures. Even reading it made me cry but seeing it on the news will stay with me. My heart goes out to all those involved in those horses.
