My Daughter came out of her GCSE English Literature exam and forgot to write the question number she done which would show the texts she answered. She is now panicking if she will be penalised for this and if they will mark the paper. She sist AQA

No. She will be fine.
Examiner of 20+ years

My ds is doing mix of paper and laptop and says keeps muddling his numbers transferring from paper to laptop. He knows this as spotted a mistake in chemistry. Exams officer says all laptop stuff printed off and put in with stuff written on paper. Hope he won't be penalised too much for these type of mistakes.
Knowing his brain, likely to happen again and he doesn't always have enough time to check himself.

There's no penalty at all

I find him exasperating as simply checking he is numbering questions correctly he goes along seems beyond his capacity!

MrsHamlet · 21/05/2025 22:18

It helps if we can find the answers, certainly!

DizzyDandilion · 21/05/2025 22:19

Gosh. That is so reassuring @MrsHamlet
The school seemed unsure.
Thank you.

MrsHamlet · 21/05/2025 22:20

Unsure about what????

DizzyDandilion · 21/05/2025 22:21

I hope obvious silly mistakes with numbering. He just finds tracking between medias tricky. His handwriting so appalling he has to do mix and match!

MrsHamlet · 21/05/2025 22:21

He should ask the exams officer before the exam if he can add numbers once he's printed if he forgets at the time. Not the invigilator.

I know that one of my y13 was permitted to in his exams.

DizzyDandilion · 21/05/2025 22:22

Unsure about whether he would lose marks if inaccurate with numbering by mistake.

MrsHamlet · 21/05/2025 22:24

If it's not obvious which question is being answered, I would refer the script. But systems for checking are pretty robust.

That said, the more you help the examiner out, the better!

DizzyDandilion · 21/05/2025 22:26

He said did ask once but told no. However need to check whether asked after printed.
He has worked so hard. Hopefully, all will be OK.
Physics tomorrow!

DizzyDandilion · 21/05/2025 22:28

I am finding you very reassuring MrsHamlet. I am not telling him hopefully ok as want him to at least try and be on the ball with numbering for the rest of his exams! I am pleased dealt with by humans. He was worried about AI...

DizzyDandilion · 21/05/2025 22:35

A big thank you for reassuring an anxious Mum and I will reassure him along with my be careful message!

MrsHamlet · 21/05/2025 22:37

Exam boards are not there with AI just yet!
Thankfully for my bank account 😂

You could perhaps contact the exams office to ask about writing numbers on - but it would obviously be better to type them at the time!

DizzyDandilion · 21/05/2025 22:38

Thank goodness for humans!
I hope he gets an examiner like you xx

madnessitellyou · 21/05/2025 22:57

She’ll be fine. 99.99 per cent of the time it’s really obvious what’s been answered. I examine Lit; please reassure her there will be no issue.

School is being bonkers.

Pickledpoppetpickle · 23/05/2025 18:51

I exam mark, not English, but a subject with a choice of essays. Occasionally a candidate forgets to check the box. We work it out. She won’t be penalised.
