On average, how much would it cost to build a new secondary school for 1200 students?

I’d say at least between £5 million easily, if not more. That is including land purchases.

About 15 years ago, in my old school, we had extended the school building as the school was previously over two sites - we amalgamated into one, 25 new classrooms were built, along with a brand new sports hall, drama/media studio and new entrance. This cost just under £2 million. Back in 2009/2010.
Had been in the planning since 2002 though.

I was expecting it to be more than that to be honest

Curious why you wanted to know?

A lot more than £5million.
That was the budget about 20 years ago for a 2 form primary school in my area. Not even a complete build. It was a renovation of an already existing building (that was built for educational use so had kitchens and a large hall) and building a new wing.

My new school cost £35 million and it's truly shocking 😮 It's completely not fit for purpose and completely designed wrong.

@Fullofpudding Why are you not impressed?

About 20 years ago my school was knocked down and rebuilt, it was 4 form entry, so small, it cost £28 million then. That included furniture and equipment I think. They raised the money by selling the old site to developers and then built on a greenfield site. It would depend hugely on the site I imagine.

The rooms are tiny, we don't have enough rooms, technology rooms don't have enough plugs etc, no extraction in food or DT rooms. The workmanship is shoddy. I could go on and on.
