Applying for new jobs

Hi
Currently working as an ECT2 in a primary school but wanting to apply for something else for September
Worked hard so hoping to find a school where I could be happier, or a pastoral role in a school etc.
Struggling with anxiety about the application process- I've seen that references are asked for before interviews? So I'd have to tell my head I am looking to leave?
Also, with requesting time off for interviews! Because I don't want to try and pull mutliple sick days if I have multiple interviews.

It's just SO awkward to me, because a friend who left last year said once people knew she was leaving she was treated so differently. And if I DONT get anything else, I'd obviously be stuck there with them knowing i dont want to be?
What do i do? Can you opt out of asking for references first? So stressful

You have to tell the head you're applying because they will be asked for references. And no you can't opt out of that

Please don't 'pull a sick day' to attend interviews, either. The consequences could potentially be significant with both your current and potential future employers. It would look rather suspicious if you were to secure a role shortly after being off sick but not having taken time to interview for a role.

That is the first suggestion I got from a friend but I always feel guilty calling up when Im ACTUALLY sick!
Just going to be so awkward having the conversation when I find something i want to apply for, not sure what to say when they ask why.

Your friend is an idiot.

Tell the head the truth: you want a new challenge

It is entirely normal to want to move on after 2 years for career progression. They can replace you with a cheaper teacher.

If it’s unpleasant to talk to the Head all the more reason to have the conversation as early as possible. You do not want them to hear from another school first.

And a school may be suspicious if you say you don’t want them to contact your current school just yet.

Write yourself a script and practise it if necessary…
