Occupational Health referral

I have been signed off ill for around two months following a hospital stay. I am returning tomorrow but school have said they will refer me to Occupational Health. I am hoping to leave teaching within the next few months anyway so not overly concerned but I have unfortunately only ever known OH referrals to be used when schools are managing staff out. Can anyone share their experience? thanks

I have had OH at every school I’ve been in due to a chronic illness. It’s only ever been a help for me. Be completely honest about your needs and what adjustments you need as your school will be required to put them in place. A bit like an EHCP for teachers 😄

Yes, OH is very positive. I dealt with them during and after my breast cancer treatment in 2021-22 and then afterwards when I had an ongoing health issue.

Found them very supportive and helpful and they give you a voice.They managed my phased return to work (even though my head teacher ignored part of it 🙄).

I have had occupational health involvement in my current and previous roles due to a permanent spinal issue.

I have always found them (and HR) to be very helpful and supportive. They basically make recommendations to the school about what you need to support you to do your role. Obviously, yours would be different to mine, but mine includes things like;

Permission to wear outdoor (walking) shoes when icy/snowy

No PE cover to avoid risk of injury

Adapted duties to avoid long periods of standing etc.

It should be fine.

You've been signed off for a couple of months so an OH referral is a step the school need to take to ensure a smooth transition back into school for you. It's nothing to be alarmed about. Hopefully you find it a positive experience in terms of supporting you.
