Do support staff get paid overtime?

Support staff have set hours, and if they are asked to work over them do they get paid overtime? Do they also get paid overtime if they volunteer to help with a club or DofE for example. Obviously teachers don’t have set working hours and can stay late, but is this the same for support staff?

Yes, support staff should be paid extra if they are asked to do more than their contracted hours. However, if they arn't asked, and they choose to stay in school to help out (some kindly do), then they won't be paid for it.

I've generally end up working an extra hour a day and never get overtime.

If they are hourly paid (then yes) otherwise time back in lieu, same as teachers who are salaried.
For context - LT Supervisors, site team including cleaners are hourly paid…
TAs and admin team are salaried along with teachers.

We (occasionally) got paid overtime as support staff for doing residentials or clubs. Private school.

I SOMETIMES get overtime if I’m asked to go a fair chunk over my contracted hours. I’m in the School office and I sometimes end up staying a couple of hours over waiting for parents to collect children. If I work extra hours to cover my colleague (I only work part time) I’m usually asked to take it as TOIL because of the financial impact. After school clubs are VOLUNTEERED for so not paid. The same with residential trips, I accompany our Y6 annual residential each year. It’s three days, two nights and I get paid for my contracted hours - last year it fell on my lower hour days so I was paid for 15 hours for the whole trip! I have a great time and the Y6 teacher really appreciates it but there isn’t the money in our budget to pay me (or the TA that comes) for the extra time. I think most of the parents think we all get paid extra though 🤷‍♀️.
All support staff (in any school I’ve worked at anyway) are on hourly pay, only teachers are salaried.

Overtime is expected but not paid in money or lieu.

Absolutely. My support staff are always paid overtime if they are asked to work extra hours, and are paid at a higher hourly rate if they cover a class (for the hours they are covering). I would never expect anyone to work for free, unless they decide to.
