Independent Sector Head of Year vs Houseparent

What is the difference between an independent sector Head of Year and Houseparent?

How much responsibility does the HoY have of the boarding students, or is everything managed by the Houseparent?

In my school (independent), pastoral and disciplinary issues go through the House Parents, who liaise with tutors. We don't have HOYs. We have Head of GCSE & sixth form but they deal with academic matters. Houseparents have a LOT of responsibility and still have quite a heavy teaching commitment. In term-time they are "on call" most of the time and this can restrict their personal/social life. Eg. they may have to take a pupil to hospital in the middle of the night or get up at 4 am to allow a pupil to leave for a flight back home. They have enormous safe-guarding responsibilities. It's not for everybody...

It varies from school to school. But in mine houseparents are mostly pastoral and HOYs mostly academic. But obviously, there is a lot of overlap.
