Secondary HTs - can you have any semblance of WLB?

I’m currently a DHT and have seen a HT job I am wondering if I should apply for. It’s a lovely school. But my own HT is on-site from 7am to 7pm each day and works more at home and weekends. She doesn’t expect it of her SLT - we’re usually on site at 8 and leave about 5.30. I do work in evenings and at weekends, but I have it at a manageable level and always manage to have a couple of nights a week of no work and one day at the weekend. I’m wondering what is typical for HTs generally. I would love to run my own school but not if it means I basically can’t have a life or see my children! Really keen to hear other’s experiences.

I’m in a similar position to you. It’s all about how you manage your time effectively.
Could your current Head delegate out some of their workload to you and other SLT to make it more manageable for them?

I think your head is a bit bonkers

Are they a micromanager?

Tbh she is a total workaholic. She does delegate and as I said she doesn’t expect it from us - I think she just doesn’t have an off-switch. We do tell her it’s not healthy! It would just worry me if she’s more typical of HTs generally. I’m hoping she’s an extreme example but I’ve worked here for ten years so I don’t know what other school cultures are like.
