How to resign - in person or email

I'm leaving my job - any advice on how to resign? Email or in person? When I went to let them know I was going for an interview head teacher was clearly very upset and I'm wondering if an email with a thank you card left on their desk is a kinder option.

I’ve always done it in person. Ask the PA for a short meeting with the head, and attend the meeting with a prewritten resignation letter.

When are you hoping to leave though? If you’re in England under burgundy book, resigning now means leaving in the summer.
