Starting my new job as a TA tomorrow, any advice?

Hi all.

Tomorrow I start my new job as a TA in a secondary school. I've never worked in a school before but I'm really looking forward to this new challenge.

I am going to be primarily working with one pupil who has some additional needs.

What advice would you give to somebody for their first day on the job? What would you take with you? Just any general advice would be great.

Thank you

Take the time to familarilse yourself with school policies and layout.
Get to know who your key colleagues are if you don’t know already and more importantly the student.

Take a pencil case with loads of spare cheap pens to lend out.
Get a planner from school or buy yourself one to keep track of your timetable/make notes
Lots of smiles, chat away to the student, find out about their interests, ask them what kind of help they want as well as reading their IEP

Hello Gandalf. I hope your first day and weeks are going well at your new job. I was just wondering if I could ask you some questions on how you got into being a TA? Did you have other relevant qualifications? How are you finding it?
Thank you!
