Lead Prac vs Director of English

Hi all
I am a lead practitioner of English (but my role is whole-school). I have been asked to apply for the Director of Learning role, which is basically Head of English but on Leadership scale.
I'm torn. WWYD?
Thanks!

If you're already on the LP scale, a change to the leadership scale won't affect your directed time.

Do you just want to do English, though?

Hibernatalie · 17/12/2023 19:59

I can't decide. I love the whole school stuff, but line managing and being more involved in the curriculum appeals to me. I think my biggest concern is being bogged down with admin.

My LP role involves a shit tonne of admin but I love the fact that I have a really varied role.

Did you apply or was it offered?

I've been asked to apply - it's mine if I want it basically.

I absolutely love my LP role and it doesn't have the admin/fire fighting stuff a HoD role has. I think I'm going to stick.

I love my job. I wouldn't go back to English alone.

This might be an unpopular opinion but having done both jobs I think it’s desirable for a lead prac to have spent some time leading an English department. If you’re already in an LP role this is academic however. Director of English is a much more operational role and if this doesn’t appeal then don’t apply.

The leadership pay shouldn’t make any difference. You should be paid already on the LP scale which goes up to the equivalent of L18. That being said I saw a couple of adverts last summer for LP vacancies paid on MPS/UPS, which is naughty of the schools.

I am already on Leadership scale, the money doesn't affect the decision at all, there would be very little in it if anything. I was HoD as a maternity cover for almost 2 academic years but that was 8 years ago (before my own children) and in a very different school.

My lead prac role isn't at all subject related though. I have been HOD but my current role is very much whole school.

I would be very surprised if your HOD experience wasn’t of use in your whole-school role?

Leadership and management skills, certainly.
