MAT not backdating the pay awards

WorkingForABunchOfCrooks · 09/11/2023 08:25

Just what the title says really. Bridge Academy Trust in Essex are only backdating the large pay award that we got this year and last year to September, not April. They changed the Trust’s pay policy to put all support staff on a Sept-Sept pay cycle and are using that as an excuse. They didn’t consult staff or unions properly so that shouldn’t stand anyway. And even if it did, it doesn’t prevent them from backdating to April. Staff are furious and our union are working with us to sort it.
Anyone else experience this?

Yes absolutely. What reason are your MAT giving? You should question it.

I was always under the impression it was from September. That is certainly what my MAT is doing.

ThanksItHasPockets · 10/11/2023 07:05

This is going to cause massive confusion. Please can you clarify, OP? Are you referring to support staff?

Support staff should be backdated to April, teaching staff to September. This is what our MAT is doing.

We are kicking off in Cornwall... our trust is not doing it from April but other kind trust locally are...

Same, support staff pay runs September to September.

JaffavsCookie · 10/11/2023 20:41

Ah, sorry, referring to teachers in my post.

SquirrelHash · 11/11/2023 12:36

Yes most of us are Unison members who are helping us fight it.

We're a SAT and always get ours backdated til April.
The pay rise is from April, they can't deny facts.

JanglyBeads · 12/11/2023 13:25

*back to April

RainSG · 14/11/2023 20:44

My MAT have done the same and only backdated from September. I’ve contacted my union who have said that it should be April even if we work in a MAT. I’ve contacted HR to clarify why but I’ve had no response. Does anyone know why it would only be from September?

Check your Trust's Pay Policy. Would guess it's because they have a Sep-Aug pay cycle. Fight it!

@WorkingForABunchOfCrooks you are right, that’s exactly what I got told today!! I’ve contacted the union though and they’re still saying that the backdate should be paid from April. So I’m holding on to a little bit of hope lol

SquirrelHash · 18/12/2023 06:41

Ours was backdated to April so I'm glad you are fighting this. Nice Xmas bonus for support staff!

MrsWombat · 20/12/2023 07:26

Is everyone who has the back pay to April on their MAT's payscale? Everyone on the NJC payscale should get it backdated to April whether they are in a trust or not. I'm curious how many MAT payscales/contracts backdate to April?

My team moved over from the NJC pay scale to our MATs pay scale on the promise of more money per hour. But we also don't get the cost of living back pay to April, only to September.

We also didn't get the April-August back pay when we moved over, it was only backdated to September, which seems to be a genuine error when I pointed it out. They are still looking into that as I bet it involves dozens of support staff so they need to double-check everyone and give them the back pay at the same time. (I think/hope)

HideTheCroissants · 21/12/2023 15:16

I’m employed by a MAT (support staff) our pay cycle is Sept-Aug but got the rise backdated to April in this months pay.

A friend (again support staff) left one MAT (last day of contract 31 August) and joined another in 4 Sept. Her current employer have told her that the previous one should pay her the backdated increase for April - August even though her contract ended in August. Does anyone know about that? Her current employer have correctly paid her the backdated rise from the time she joined them.

RainSG · 21/12/2023 18:21

Hi all!

I’m in a MAT and after asking numerous people I continually got told we are meant to get the backdated pay from September. Union seems to strongly disagree but I got no where with it. I got the backpay this month but only from September :(

Hipnotised · 23/12/2023 02:39

That's outrageous.

I'm support staff in an academy (not MAT) and had it paid in November, backdated to April.

Yes most of us are Unison members who are helping us fight it.

You need to organise yourselves within the school then. The NEU have said they would support sustained (paid) strike action in schools which are not giving/backdating the pay rise. I would assume Unison would do the same?

It's very likely even the threat of industrial action would make your school change their mind.
