I've been a midday assistant since the new academic year started and though the kids are lovely and I think im doing well (I've had no feedback).
I really can't gel with some of the other
staff I've had some snotty snide comments off a few of them that have made me feel totally on edge, every day im coming home worrying if I've done something wrong or said anything incorrect.
I've been warned by others that not all is happy smiles and sunshine in the school and to basically watch my back its left me super on edge theres lots of bitchyness and slagging off from the staff.
I just dont know is this is normal in a school environment

I would consider changing schools. In my experience, schools with this kind of "toxic" environment are usually poorly led and staff feel able to act in this unacceptable manner without consequence. It's highly unlikely to be you personally that's the problem, more likely a badly led school where all the other staff are stressed and on edge themselves because the lack of leadership prevents issues from being sorted out. In the meantime, I would keep your head down, be pleasant to everyone and know that all you are doing is being professional and kind. If others choose to act differently, then that's up them. And to answer your question, yes schools are often very difficult places to work, a place where thick skin is needed! Take care.

Which other staff - what are their job roles?

@Cactifly some of the other middsys and some of the teaching team it feels a very toxic environment
However my kids also go to the school and I didn't realise how the environment is from a parents view of the school
