When is too soon to leave?

I made the jump from primary to secondary in September and I hate it.
Everything I imagined in my head has turned out to be the complete opposite and I’ve been given a leadership role I don’t want but have been told ‘this is what happens in primary.’
I don’t think I’m a good fit for the school and it’s making me ill. It will look awful if I hand my notice in at half term, won’t it? Any advice or words of wisdom!

I assume you meant to say you moved from secondary to primary?

Anyhow, if the job is making you ill, something needs to change. No job is worth that.

On the other hand, primary is very different so it could be that you find your feet eventually? I suppose it depends if you feel its worth sticking it out for a while?

I think as you changed stage, it won't look too bad if you leave after a term. You can explain it in an interview quite easily.

What subject do you teach at secondary level? There is a shortage of teachers in many subjects so you should be able to find a job back in secondary.

Thanks for the reply, and yes, I absolutely meant secondary to primary!

Maybe teaching full stop is just no longer for me?

Thanks again for responding.

Hiya,

I went from Secondary to Middle at Easter and am not enjoying it (mostly to do with the school and a severe lack of behaviour management) - either way, I’m handing in my notice at Christmas and would’ve done it at May had I decided by the deadline.

Go with your gut and do what’s right for you. Good luck x

Yes, this is the same for me! There is ZERO in terms of consequences for poor behaviour.
Do you mean you will leave at Christmas and hand notice at October or stick it out until Christmas to leave later?x

Handing in my notice in October to leave at Christmas, couldn’t survive beyond then!! 🤣 x

Are you nervous? Have you found any other jobs?
Im terrified about doing this but figured I would just do supply until I find something that’s a better fit.
good luck to you ❤️

Yes I’ve fortunately managed to secure another job, however, if I hadn’t, I was planning on doing supply until I found something because I can’t bear any longer in my current place!

Solitaryasanoyster · 25/09/2023 06:19

Are you scared about handing your notice in? I’m such a wimp and worried about telling them after such little time! I think they will make my life pretty miserable whilst I work my notice

To be completely honest, no.

I know it looks bad after only starting at Easter, and I did reference this fact when I told the head I was interviewing for another job, but I feel so unhappy there that it’s given me some courage to stand up for myself.

I didn’t give my full reasoning when I initially told him about interviewing - I just said I didn’t feel the values of the school aligned with my own and that I was not able to work effectively there.

I’m saving my true feelings for my exit interview/official resignation letter!

Keep us posted x
